PROJECTS LAUNCHED
Economic Vent Gas Mitigation Options Projects

Over the past two years, PTAC has helped to launch a number of projects focused on finding economic methods to reduce vent gas and other GHG emissions from upstream oil and gas operations. These projects are at various stages of completion, but are all focused on developing tools and information to assist producers in their efforts to economically reduce emissions. The following is a brief status report on these projects. More information is available on the New Paradigm Engineering Ltd. web site at www.newparadigm.ab.ca/.

Conventional Heavy Oil Vent Options – this project was com-pleted in February 2001 and all the project materials generated are available from New Paradigm. Between March and September, six technology transfer workshops were offered through PTAC in Calgary and Lloyd-minster with over 80 participants from producers, vendors and regulators.

Vent Options for Thermal Heavy Oil, Conventional Oil and Gas Production Facilities and Gas Processing and Compression Facilities – these phases were launched in early 2001 and the initial deliverables are now being completed. Technology transfer workshops based on these studies should begin in early 2002.

In November 2001, New Paradigm and Clearstone Engineering held a technology information session to propose a new Vent Gas Demonstrations Project. This initiative is intended to provide assistance to leading producers in developing case studies to demonstrate to other producers and stake-holders the economic advantages of their vent gas reduction and energy efficiency projects. A minimum of $100k in funding is being sought from governments and industry associations to support this project.

New Paradigm also plans to propose other new projects in early 2002 to further develop and demonstrate potential methods for dealing economically with small and fugitive methane streams for which new options are required.

Reservoir Recovery

WORKING GROUP FORMED
Husky Seeks Solutions for Abandonment Pressure Reduction

Husky Oil launched a Joint Industry Project Working Group on Abandonment Pressure Reduction December 4th to design and implement a pumping system that would allow production at lower bottom-hole pressures with high, erratic gas-to-liquids ratios.

Frank McIntyre delivered a presentation discussing target pressures and potential cash flow incentives for an abandonment pressure reduction project, and pointed out the need for a technique to reduce pressure in order to recover gas and allow liquids in the reservoir to vaporize.

The 12 representatives from producer, and service and supply companies were asked for their comments, ideas or questions. Schlumberger (REDA) delivered a presentation on a potential solution nearing completion. The group defined categories of wells for which solutions were needed. Kudu Industries and ProMore Engineering Inc. are considering producing a joint proposal. Group members will present their solutions to producers at a meeting to be held early in 2002.
