EnergyINet Project Seeks
Funding Only project funders will receive early and complete release of all project material in hard copy and electronic format, two years prior to public release. Funders will learn in which pools they could deploy both existing and new technology to significantly increase oil and gas production. Funders will also gain access to templates, tools, and methodologies for evaluating the potential impact of existing and new technologies. The project will cover all pool types, including tight gas, currently discovered with available public data. Project results are expected to be made available to funders by March 31, 2005. Alberta Energy Research Institute funding of $425,000 towards the Alberta portion of this project has been approved and is conditional on matching funding from industry and other governments. ConocoPhillips Canada, Devon Canada Corporation, EnCana Corporation, Enerplus Resources Fund, Husky Energy Inc., Nexen Inc., and Schlumberger of Canada have committed funding totaling $108,000 as at September 13, 2004. The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board has also contributed database information valued at $35,000 to the project. The total project cost including the Alberta Saskatchewan and BC portions is $ 840,000. Detailed project information is available at
www.ptac.org/res/rest0402.html. Alberta Government Invests $1 Million in U of C Energy Institute Energy research in Alberta will take another leap forward with a $1-million government grant to the Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy (ISEEE), housed at the University of Calgary. The ISEEE, working in partnership with the
University of Alberta, the University of Lethbridge, the Province
(through the Alberta Energy Research Institute) and the oil and
gas industry, provides leadership and coordination for developing
and implementing new ideas, innovations and technologies to
further harness Alberta's vast energy potential.

Coalbed
Methane / Unconventional Gas PTAC and the Canadian Society for Unconventional Gas (CSUG) are hosting the Sixth Annual Unconventional Gas Conference on November 17-19, 2004, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Conference delegates will gain valuable insight, technical, and business information relating to unconventional gas. This conference highlights technical papers that address reservoir properties of unconventional gas resources, economic/business challenges for Natural Gas from Coal (NGC) development, coal characteristics, and reservoir stimulation techniques. Current case studies that relate to producing NGC fields in Canada and the United States will also be presented. In addition to presentations, interactive panel discussions such as producer updates on industry activities and multiple stakeholder groups communicating on industry issues ensure an interesting and well-rounded program.

The agenda is nearly finalized for PTAC’s 2004 Wireless, Telecommunications and e-Business Forum. You are invited to participate in this exciting forum and networking reception for the upstream oil and gas industry. Case study presentations encompassing wireless, SCADA and Well Data Life Cycle Management technology applications will provide technology demonstrations showing how wireless, telecommunications and e-business technology solutions can improve operational effectiveness and reduce costs for oil and gas industry customers. Bring your wireless technology implementation questions for the panel of industry experts who will convene prior to the networking reception at the conclusion of the forum. Numerous participation opportunities include the following:

www.ptac.org/techeetf.html or contact – Environmental Technology Barriers Assessment Study Launched Upcoming Opportunities for Input – Workshop and Web Survey PTAC and the Technology for Emission Reduction and Eco-Efficiency (TEREE) Steering Committee invite your support for a study aimed at identifying and assessing barriers to environmental technology deployment in the upstream oil and gas industry. Building on last year’s successful Spudding Innovation study, undertaken by PTAC with the assistance of Calgary management consulting firm Deep Blue Associates Inc., this barriers study will now examine social, regulatory and other non-technical barriers to the deployment of emissions reduction and related technologies in natural gas and conventional oil with a primary focus on the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. Like Spudding Innovation, which led to changes in Alberta’s royalty regime, this study is intended to propose ways to overcome barriers and lead to greater adoption of environmental technologies in the oil and gas sector. The study’s report is intended to be a follow-up to the CETAC-West report prepared in November 2003 entitled An Assessment of Alberta's Environmental Technologies Industry posted on PTAC’s web site at www.ptac.org/links/dl/eet0401fr.pdf. Furthermore, it will build on findings presented to the TEREE committee by Clearstone Engineering in May 2004, on the top five emission reduction opportunities in Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. These findings are posted for public access on PTAC’s web site at www.ptac.org/links/dl/TEREEMatrix.xls. The project scope for the barriers study consists of a literature review, facilitated workshops, one-on-one interviews, focus group discussions, a web survey, and finally a report with recommendations. A workshop for industry input is tentatively scheduled for October 27, 2004. PTAC looks forward to your participation at this event to ensure the study reflects your views. Watch for an invitation to this workshop coming soon. The web survey will be posted on the PTAC site Sept. 30; please make a point of logging your views! Government has already funded $35,000 towards this project with $30,000 from Alberta Energy Research Institute and $5000 from Alberta Economic Development. PTAC is requesting the remaining $13,000 required to complete the study from industry supporters seeking to reduce operating costs by improving efficiencies. Environment Detailed Agenda Poster Session - Limited Space Available Air emissions and their associated health effects are a complex topic that is increasingly important to the petroleum industry. Both the federal and provincial governments are requiring increased emissions reporting, which has led to the development of new processes and technologies for emissions inventorying and reporting. Air-related research to date has focused mainly on improving flaring performance, but as scientific data are generated the focus is shifting to new technology development geared at reducing air emissions. Event Highlights
Given the current degree of interest in the issue of the health effects from sour gas operations, this presentation should be of value to many HSE professionals.
Forum attendees will also have to the opportunity to participate in an open format priorities discussion on the future direction of air related research. A poster and networking reception immediately following the forum provides an ideal venue in which to exchange findings, ideas and network with peers. For further information, please contact – Health and Safety Call for PowerPoint and Poster Presentations Driving Safety Technology Forum PTAC invites you to present a case study or success story at the upcoming Driving Safety Technology Forum covering one of the following topics:
The focus of the forum is to introduce new technologies to improve driving safety in the petroleum industry. PowerPoint presentations must provide results of soft or hard technology applications or describe proposed technology demonstration projects. End-user presentations do not require a co-sponsor or need to submit an abstract and will be given preference. The deadline for abstracts is September 30th. To be considered, please review the Call for PowerPoint and
