Technical Writer, Unconventional Gas Technology Roadmap
RFP   Project

PTAC Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada invites you to respond to the subject RFP. PTAC, industry and government participants including the Canadian Society of Unconventional Gas are in the early stages of the development of the PTAC Unconventional Gas Technology Roadmap (TRM) which requires an additional writer. The roadmap, which involves researching and outlining the business and societal challenges to development, the state of the current recovery technology and the best avenues for improved or new technology, will conclude with the release of a roadmap document by March 31, 2006.

The overall coordination of the roadmap has been undertaken by Len Flint of Lenef Consulting, who led the development of a similar road map for the oil sand industry and was writer of several sections and principal editor. While Len Flint and PTAC, in conjunction with a technical steering committee will have overall editorial control of the final document, we are seeking the services of a technical writer to gather available information from internal sources, and from four technical workshops planned for October 2005. Having the outline of the TRM already in place, the writer will be responsible to complete drafts of five technical sections as follows:

  • Coal bed methane
  • Tight gas
  • Shale gas
  • Gas hydrates
  • Environmental challenges

The overall format for each of the sections will be preset by PTAC. We expect each section to include text and embedded charts, and total approximately 50 pages of regular text, using Arial 11 point. An example of the level of detail and style can be found in the Oil Sands Technology Roadmap. This document is available in pdf form on the Alberta Chamber of Resources website at www.acr-alberta.com.

We invite you to submit a proposal including references and resume outlining your relevant experience to complete this part of the roadmap. The work will commence in early October 2005 and the deadline for proposals is September 30, 2005. The successful candidate will be notified no later than October 5, 2005. The first workshop is scheduled October 11, 2005. Attendance at all workshops, five days time totalling 27 hours, is mandatory.

EXPECTATIONS OF THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE
The successful candidate will ideally have the following skills and experience:
  1. Previous experience in technical writing and the capability to interpret technical information in a readable style directed to a broad audience including non-technical people
  2. Some background knowledge of the unconventional gas business including terminology associated with it, for example, terms such as drilling, well completion, fracturing, fracturing fluids, well modelling, cleats etc
  3. Established contacts within the unconventional gas industry
  4. Be familiar with search techniques on websites or other special data sources to gain background information as appropriate (some of this information is expected to be available from a parallel activity to develop a standard data base for this and other studies)
  5. Ability to work closely with other volunteer contributors to write pre-workshop briefing papers
  6. Ability to work closely in a cooperative way with the project manager and PTAC
Final drafts of the five sections previously mentioned are required no later than January 15, 2006.

APPROXIMATE COSTS
We expect the total cost for this work to not exceed $20,000 plus GST. However, we invite applicants to provide an estimate of the cost of their services whether it falls below or above the projected cost.
