2007 02 15 Low GHG Recovery Technology Scenarios for Bitumen in Carbonate Formations in AlbertaInvitation Presentations Evaluation Summary Thursday, February 15, 2007 EnCana Amphitheatre, Room 260, Tower Centre, 2nd Level InvitationPTAC Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada invites you to attend a workshop on low GHG recovery technology scenarios for bitumen in carbonate formations in Alberta. Project DescriptionVast quantities of bitumen are locked in carbonate rock deposits in the Athabasca and Peace River regions of Alberta. Early recovery pilot trials in the 1970s and 80s led to spectacular but erratic results. Today, these challenging deposits remain undeveloped. It is likely that, in time, favorable economic conditions will drive their exploitation using incremental adaptation of existing thermal technologies. However, this scenario would result in increased energy intensity and greenhouse gas emissions. A PTAC led project, with support from NRCan and AERI, is evaluating alternative scenarios involving low GHG recovery technologies for bitumen in carbonate deposits, particularly the Grosmont formation. On February 1, 2007, a broad overview of the project will be presented at a PTAC Technology Information Session (TIS). By contrast, this workshop will be an interactive, in-depth, review of the early results regarding bitumen in carbonate formations and will allow participants to contribute additional information and feedback.
