Field Pilot for Near Well Treatment to Reduce Gas Coning/Channeling

Gas coning into oil production wells causes the productivity of the oil wells to be impaired. For the past three years, PRI and a consortium of companies have conducted a research and technology development program to investigate the use of gel/foams to block the gas coning. The gel/foam technology developed promises to be more stable and long lasting than gel alone which has been used in the field. The participants feel the technology is ready to be field-tested and Husky has identified three wells in the Rainbow, Alberta area to be tested. The field pilot plans are progressing rapidly with PRI staff designing the gel/foam treatments and conducting reservoir simulation studies. Husky has made application to the Alberta Department of Energy to support the field test. There were 13 participants in the 1997/98 project.
