2015 Ecological Issues and Resource Access Forum

Nov 23, 2015
7:30 AM - 5:00 PM
The Calgary Petroleum Club
319 - 5th Ave SW
Calgary, AB
This event is currently not open for registration.

Sustainable resource development and access to the resource are some of the leading challenges facing industry today. The oil and gas industry is committed to managing physical footprint on the landscape and to minimizing industry-based effects on species, ecosystems and ecosystem components. The challenge facing industry is to minimize impacts to all levels of biodiversity (including flora and fauna) and ecological processes while continuing to develop oil and gas reserves, and to effectively restore impacted areas. At the same time, it is important that the regulatory requirements governing oil and gas activity in these areas be based in science. Thus, research is needed to affect the direction of current and emerging policy and legislation.

Oil and gas producers have in recent years invested millions of dollars in ecological related research projects to address these challenges. The broad focus areas of these projects include the role of predation in woodland caribou population declines; the effectiveness of industry footprint reclamation or functional restoration; the effectiveness of mitigation activities; and wildlife responses to oil and gas activity.

This event provides technical updates of the 2013/2014 industry sponsored research that have had oversight from industry and government technical champions. The intent of projects selected through multi-stakeholder review and funded through the AUPRF program is that they may lead to changes in best practices and regulations. Interspersed among the project-based presentations will be presentations related to recently identified priority issues and initiatives for the oil and gas sector.

8:30 AM Welcome and Introduction
PTAC
8:45 AM Panel - Cumulative Effects Assessment and Information Management System
  • Panel Lead – Shane Patterson, Alberta Innovation and Advanced Education
  • Dr. Kelly Munkittrick, Director, Monitoring Environmental Priority Area, COSIA
  • Monique Dube, Chief Environmental Scientist, AER
  • Dallas Johnson, Director of Cumulative Effects Assessment, AEP
  • Peter Koning, ConocoPhillips Canada

The development and successful implementation of any Integrated Resource Management System (IRMS) requires a shared cumulative effects knowledge base and information management system. For development activities, this shared approach can enable informed decision-making by industry, regulators and policy makers.

Foundational to this approach is the need to determine environmental capacities and set condition thresholds for air, land, water and biodiversity through regional environmental management or regulatory frameworks. Any decisions on development activities must consider their impacts in relation to these thresholds.

In Alberta, cumulative effects assessment and management along with regional planning will be used to manage the impacts of development on land, water, air and biodiversity. The goal of the panel discussion will be to provide an overview of:

  • IRMS Partners: Roles and responsibilities of AER and AEP within IRMS
  • Industry Perspective: Working within IRMS
  • Role for the Alberta Upstream Petroleum Research Fund within IRMS
