PTAC Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada invites you or a suitable representative from your organization to participate in this Driving Safety Forum to identify ways and means to reduce wildlife/vehicle strikes on an industry-wide basis.  

This forum will provide you with the opportunity to:

  • Gain knowledge of mitigative methods including practices, procedures and technologies and their effectiveness in reducing vehicle accidents.
  • Make a presentation on this topic.
    Statistically review the magnitude and nature of this risk to industry and how it impacts your business.
  • Review past efforts to control the incidence of vehicle accidents including caution notes / briefing to staff and contractors/use of maps with animal observation trends.
  • Brainstorm and capture ideas to reduce fatalities and injuries to employees and contractors, including the number of animal/vehicle strikes, and to reduce financial losses.
  • Provide guidance/input on a future workshop that will develop collaborative industry initiatives to significantly improve industry performance.This could include, but is not limited to, best practices or guidelines, technology pilot projects and research projects to evaluate various available methods to reduce vehicle accidents.

Presentations will include information on the following issues:

Environment - How do our roads affect animal movement? What can be done to allow animals to cross safely?

Drivers - Is there any training that is needed to help drivers avoid animal strikes? Are there more hazardous areas that the drivers need to be aware of?

Vehicles - Should vehicles be equipped to handle an animal strike? Should additional lights, bull bars, whistles or sensory equipment be installed to reduce the risk / consequence of a strike?

Animals - Are there methods to make animals more aware of approaching vehicles? Can or should the numbers be reduced
