For more than 20 years, the Alberta Upstream Petroleum Research Fund (AUPRF) formerly the Environmental Research Advisory Council (ERAC) has been launching peer-reviewed research studies, under the guidance of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP), with administrative and facilitation help since 1999 from the Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada (PTAC). This sponsorship of scientific research is an integral part of CAPP's commitment, through its Stewardship initiative, to continually improve its environment, health and safety performance. AUPRF was founded in the mid-1970's by the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) to initiate research and technology development on environmental issues relating to the production of crude oil and natural gas in Western Canada. In the past five years, direct and in-kind contributions to AUPRF from CAPP, individual member companies, the Small Explorers and Producers Association of Canada (SEPAC), federal and provincial governments, academic institutions, and research groups have totaled over $6 million.
