Request Technical Information

The mission of the Network is to identify opportunities for enhancing economic development (i.e., using innovation, and technology solutions to increase production rate and reserves and reduce the overall cost), and minimize the environmental impact in the Cardium, Bakken, Duvernay, Viking, Beaverhill Lake, Montney and Slave Lake unconventional plays by optimizing water management, reducing GHG emissions, finding skills training, logistics for people and equipment, and access to technologies.

Production rates highly depend on the use of the most appropriate technology for each target reservoir. Collaboration projects to share learnings and improve or develop technologies would result in increased production and reserves.

In 2014, PTAC launched and completed 2 projects relevant to this Network: The Current Practices, Future Trends and Environmental Impacts of Hydraulic Fracturing in Alberta, and Mapping Unconventional Resource Industry in the Cardium Play Region. In 2015, PTAC launched projects on Technology Opportunities in the Unconventional Duvernay and Bakken Plays as well as projects on Novel Water Treatment Technologies for Application to Hydraulic Fracturing and Proppant Surface Treatment and Well Stimulation for Tight Oil and Shale Gas Development. Continuing into 2016, PTAC will be completing a Tight Oil and Shale Gas Innovation Roadmap that will look at prospective geological formations for tight oil and shale gas, modern practices of hydraulic fracturing, and environmental and economic impacts. Completion of the Roadmap will involve three workshops related to multi-stage hydraulic fracturing and the issues related to water management (December 2015), air emissions (January 2016), and resource plays and production gaps and opportunities (February 2016). For more information, please contact PTAC regarding opportunities to contribute to technical committees and to workshop organization.
