How can we develop and produce Canada's bitumen resources in a manner that is both sustainable and profitable? And how can we convert our existing resources into production in an efficient and orderly manner to meet future global demand, reduce barriers to export, and mitigate social impacts? Our challenge is to find suitable technologies to commercially produce this resource while minimizing the environmental footprint. This is a tall order, particularly in an industry that can often face volatile commodity markets when costs are high and the expectation to manage the environmental footprint is heightened. But this is not an impossible task.

Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada (PTAC) and the members of the Clean Bitumen Technology Action Plan consortium invite you to participate in the first workshop in a series on the Clean Bitumen Technology Action Plan (CBTAP). CBTAP is a fact based facilitated process involving 25 stakeholder organizations from industry and government, and experts from oil sands technical and environmental disciplines.

This initiative will begin with the identification of areas with high potential for breakthrough improvement, a review of technologies and studies to conduct gap analyses that reflect today's practices relative to some future envisioned end state. It will unfold over 12 months as a series of workshops and topical reports, culminating in an authoritative document that will serve as an action plan for technology development and form a foundation for future policy, strategy and investment decisions

The CBTAP will seek to answer key questions for sustainable bitumen development with due consideration of profitability, environmental management, social impact, and market opportunity such as:

  • What is the vision for bitumen deposit development in Canada?
  • What strategic directions do we require to achieve this desired end-state vision?
  • What future technology advancements (beyond those being used and developed today) could offer significantly improved performance over the present day technologies? Including, but not limited to, technology advancements in recovery, extraction, upgrading, carbon management, and water management.
  • How do we identify, accelerate, and implement new and emerging technologies to meet the vision while also minimizing duplication and waste?
  • What resources, framework and collaborative models are required to meet the vision?

Who Should Attend

All levels of management, engineers, geologists, operations personnel, HSE personnel, R&D producers and others who are interested in collaborative technology development and planning strategic RD&D efforts to support development of our bitumen resource.

Why Should You Attend

Opportunity to provide your input into the CBTAP Strategic Plan and participate in technology subcommittees on breakthrough, existing and emerging technologies. You will also receive a pre-workshop survey to complete and submit in advance of the workshop, as a condition of acceptance of your registration.
