Field Pilot for Water Abatement in Gas Reservoirs

Excessive water production in gas wells causes an economic and physical restraint on gas well production. Two years ago, PRI with a consortium of companies started to address this problem with the unique application of gels to block the water influx. The work has lead to the concept of using a sequence of alternating gas and gel placement to achieve the blockage of water without impairment of the gas production.

On April 7, 1998 a field pilot consortium was proposed at an industry meeting. The proposed program is to field test two application techniques of the gas/gel concept. Immediately following the meeting Amoco and Shell indicated that they could be nominating locations for the field test. Other attendees will be considering nominations to be made at the project organization meeting scheduled for May 7, 1998 at PRI. An application to ADOE for funding is being prepared. There were 8 participants in the 1997/98 project.
