ARC’s Enhanced Gas and Oil Recovery (EGOR) Program Current Status and New Directions
Presentation 1 PDF (3,660 KB)   Presentation 2 PDF (3,790KB)

Nexen Canada Ltd. and the Alberta Research Council invite you to attend 2 consecutive industry information meetings on ARC’s EGOR program.  EGOR projects cover a range of oil and gas industry activities of interest to both producing and service companies. Discussions on progress and future perspectives for technological development in the areas of improved oil & gas production will be initiated.

Date:
Wednesday, February 6, 2002
Session 1:
Enhanced Oil Recovery Projects at ARC
This will be of interest to oil & gas operators who are involved in alternative waterflood methods, reservoir characterization, and CO2 utilization
Time 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. (Breakfast provided)
Session 2:
Enhanced Natural Gas Production at ARC

The ultimate goal of this research program is to improve the economic recovery of natural gas
Time 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. (Lunch provided between 11:00 – 11:30 am)
Location:   Nexen Theatre, +15 Level, 801 – 7th Avenue S.W., Calgary, Alberta
(North side of 7th Avenue – See Nexen security for further direction)

Background
EGOR was unveiled in 2001 as a five year research and technology development program focused on Gas Flooding, Primary and Secondary Oil Recovery, and Enhanced Natural Gas Production.  These research projects have already enjoyed success from laboratory testing to field applications.

Scope of Session 1 – Enhanced Oil Recovery Projects at ARC

  • Overview of Strategic Area
  • Current Research Projects and Objectives
    1. “Screening of Alberta Pools for CO2 injection”.  The screening program determines which Alberta pools are amenable to CO2 EOR and storage.
    2. “CO2 WAG Flooding”.  The CO2 WAG Flooding project involves the optimization of WAG operations.
    3. “Gravity Stable Waterflooding”.  Optimum parameters for field implementation of gravity stable water floods are determined in this project
    4. “Improved Formation Evaluation of Carbonate Reservoirs”.  Improved prediction methods are developed to determine irreducible water saturation, hydrocarbon reserves and permeability in carbonate reservoirs.
  • New Potential Projects (Open Forum): utilizing wormholes in IOR, dump floods, high pressure air injection, reservoir surveillance aids for the management of waterfloods, conformance control technologies, “suggestions invited from the audience”, etc.

Scope of Session 2 – Enhanced Natural Gas Production

  • Overview of Strategic Area
  • Current Research Projects and Objectives
    1. “Water Abatement in Gas Wells”:  To design, optimize, and field test technologies to reduce excessive water production in gas wells
    2. “Regain Permeability in Tight Gas Reservoirs”: To regain permeability to gas in tight-gas reservoirs experiencing aqueous phase trapping formation damage
    3. “Gas Recovery from Methane Hydrates”: To develop a technique which uses carbon dioxide to accelerate methane production from natural gas hydrate reservoirs
  • New Potential Projects: open forum with suggestions invited from audience.

The Opportunity
EGOR is an industry-driven program to develop technologies focused on improving oil and natural gas recovery.  Industry Members, the Alberta Energy Research Institute (AERI), and ARC jointly fund this program. For an annual fee, participating companies are entitled to play a major role in directing the focus of the research program, gain direct access to the experimental results relating to their field operations, and receive a royalty free license to use the developed/improved technologies.
