ARC's Technology Development Initiatives In Improved Waterflooding

PTAC Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada, Alberta Research Council (ARC) Inc. and Nexen, Inc. invite you, or a representative from your organization, to attend an information session highlighting a proposed Waterflood Technology Program. The goal of this program is to increase waterflood efficiency and oil recovery through the advancement of waterflood technologies. Judicious implementation of these innovative technologies will increase economic returns while ensuring effective use of water resources. Implementation of new waterflood strategies in conventional & heavy oils can considerably increase oil reserves.

Background
Waterflooding has been applied as an improved oil recovery mechanism for more than 100 years. Currently, almost all of the operated waterfloods in the Western Canadian Basin are at a mature stage with high water cut and average total recovery factor ranging between 20 and 40% OOIP. ARC believes that two major areas for improvement need to be addressed: the increase of waterflood recovery factors from existing reservoirs and the extension of waterfloods to fields previously considered economically unattractive.

Project Description
Similar waterflooding issues face operating companies and ARC is proposing a collaborative approach to identifying and addressing the producing industry needs to set up and arrange a series of Joint Industry Projects (JIP). These JIPs will be focused investigations designed to add value to your waterflood operations. Some of the challenges addressed within the program are divided below into heavy and light oil applications, even though the technologies may overlap.

  1. Heavy oil reservoirs:
    1. Investigating & modeling the basic heavy oil recovery mechanisms: oil/gas segregation during primary recovery promoting viscous fingering during waterfloods
    2. Optimal horizontal & vertical well configurations for waterflooding in heavy oil reservoirs Practical mobility control for waterfloods in heavy oil reservoirs
  2. Light oil reservoirs:
    1. Alternate water sources and lower handling costs (dump flooding, water from CBM, and reuse of produced and waste water)
    2. Chemical applications for reduction of residual oil saturation and conformance control
    3. Injection of waste/ stranded gases in a WAG mode, to improve the sweep efficiency of new and existing waterflood operations
ARC has over 30 years of experience in developing enhanced waterflooding technologies and processes, and has a broad knowledge base and capabilities in areas such as chemical flooding, optimized well configuration, reservoir characterization and water handling. ARC is seeking to leverage these capabilities with industry and other research and government organizations to further innovate waterflood technology. ARC is already involved in the field testing of new waterflood technology and proposes in this program, to advance the waterflood technologies from conceptual stage to field application. As added value for the participants, field specific applications will be designed for their reservoirs.
