Invitation

EnergyINet, Nexen Inc., and PTAC Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada invite you to attend an information session on Enhanced Recovery by Gas Injection. Bruce Peachey, PTAC/EnergyINet's Director of Increased Recovery, will take a look back at historical gas injection EOR and EGR projects in the WCSB, and then look forward to examine the need for a renewed assessment of gas injection process options for the basin. New options could support a solid business case for gas based EOR in many fields which would traditionally not have been targeted for gas EOR.

Background

Gas Injection for EOR and even EGR is not new, and use of gas injection is rapidly growing in the United States and other mature producing areas, to increase conventional oil recoveries and extend domestic oil supplies. However, since a brief flurry of activity in the 1970's, few gas EOR projects have actually been implemented in Canada. Many of the past projects from the 1970's were technical successes, but became economic failures when commodity prices dropped. New projects, like EnCana's Weyburn Project, are showing the promise of gas injection in large fields, while other projects such as Anadarko's Enchant and Apache's Zama Projects, are showing promise for smaller pools. Despite the current focus on CO2-based EOR, it should be remembered that there are other types of low cost gas EOR, which must also be considered, for both large and small pools. Finding the most sustainable and profitable EOR methods and gas sources, for a given pool, requires that all options be considered, to ensure a robust solution that is relatively independent of price and policy changes.

Scope of the Information Session

This information session will highlight some of the other options for gas EOR, and how they might serve the needs of various pools, which might not be normally considered candidates for gas EOR, and how the risks and costs can be reduced while increasing economic recovery.

Who Should Attend
  • Oil and Gas Producers - Reservoir, Facilities, Production and Development engineers
  • Regulators and policy makers for oil production
  • Vendors of Gas Compressors and Equipment
  • Others interested in assessing the EOR potential in the WCSB
