Invitation

FirmSoft Technologies Inc., Cenovus, Fekete Associates and Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada (PTAC) invite you to attend an information session on "Rapid History Matching With Sensitivity-Based Parameter Modifications at Grid-Block Level".

Background

History matching is often the most expensive and challenging step in reservoir modeling. Commercial software tools have recently been introduced that automate parts of the process so that less manual/trial-and-error work is necessary. SenEx-1, recently released by FirmSoft Technologies Inc., follows a sophisticated analytical approach that offers great advantages when compared to existing tools.

History matching using SenEx-1 is

  • High Quality: The well-by-well match is usually superior. In addition, geological properties are modified at the grid-block level; eliminating the need for "box-multipliers". Changes are applied only as and where needed, preserving the original geological model as much as possible.
  • Rapid: Only a small number of simulation runs is needed compared to other approaches.
  • Low Cost: Recommended modifications of the parameter are computed analytically, requiring minimal human involvement.

SenEx-1 has been applied successfully on 9 real-world projects, most of which have hundreds of thousands of active grid blocks, 100+ wells, and 10's of history years.

The SenEx-2 Project

The goal of this project is to add to SenEx various extensions that make it more powerful and more widely applicable. Examples of such extensions include the following:

  • Covering advanced simulation options such as DPDP, coal-bed methane, etc.
  • Employing sophisticated computer technologies (e.g., parallel, GPU)
  • Employing advanced neural network algorithms for further automation of the history matching loop
  • Links to other existing software packages

The project will be carried out in 18 months, with an estimated cost of $600,000. The project will be broken into 3 phases, 6 months each, as will be explained in detail during the presentation.

Project Funding

We look forward for funding from interested oil and gas producing companies. During the session, three tracks for funding will be presented, starting at $7500/6months. Contributors will gain great benefits that include the following:

  • SenEx-1 and SenEx-2 will be applied to a sample of the contributor's own data showing results that are most relevant to the contributor's particular needs.
  • Contributors will get free access to SenEx licenses.
  • Contributors' input will influence what extensions to SenEx-1 are to be included in each phase of the project, and how these will be prioritized.

Details of the proposed funding program and benefits to collaborators will be presented and discussed during the session.
