Economically Beneficial Waste Gas Injection for Recovery Enhancement

The Petroleum Recovery Institute and Alberta Energy Company (AEC) invite you to attend a presentation on a new project focusing on the injection of waste gases for economic and environmental objectives. (Lunch provided)

Background
This project will investigate the development of an economically viable process for reducing the release of greenhouse gases from Western Canada oil and gas production into the atmosphere. The purpose is to determine the role waste-gas injection could play in enhanced gas recovery in medium, heavy, and bitumen oil reserve depletion processes; define volumes of waste gases available in reasonable proximity to target reservoirs; and to evaluate the capture, gathering and process costs to make them usable.

A survey will be conducted to define the geographic location of sources, volumes and compositions of waste gas emissions that are in close proximity to medium/heavy oil reservoirs. Probable per-unit-volume investments and operating costs will then be evaluated for waste-gas gathering, processing and compression to prepare injection-ready fluids for reservoir use. The probable benefits for recovery and productivity enhancement schemes, including any product-value losses that might occur as the result of injecting waste-gases, will be evaluated.

Project Goal
To determine volumes of waste-gases available in reasonable proximity to target reservoirs, and to determine the role waste-gases could play in medium/heavy oil depletion processes.

Scope of Project

  • Survey the geographic locations of sources, volume and compositions.
    Evaluate the surface facilities and wellbore equipment required to effectively gather waste-gases.
  • Evaluate the facilities required to process and compress the gases to injection-ready condition.
  • Evaluate facilities and procedures required for implementation of recovery and productivity enhancement schemes for medium/heavy oil reservoir
  • Estimate the benefits realized from implementation of recovery and productivity enhancement.

The scope of the project will be worked out in more detail at the January 13, 1998 session. The project would be complete and deliverables provided by March 1999.

Project Cost
$200,000 (estimated among 10 participants)

Benefits
This process (if viable) may contribute to reduction of greenhouse gases, while at the same time provide an alternative solution for recovery processes for medium and heavy oil reservoirs.
