“Shop Floor R&D as It Relates to the Oil and Gas Industry”
Seventh in the Series of SR&ED Technical Working Group Forums

Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA), KPMG High Technology Practice Group, PTAC and PSAC invite you to attend a Technical Working Group session designed to clarify the kind of R&D work carried out in a commercial facility or in a production environment that may qualify for SR&ED tax credits. The session will provide highlights of the newly developed Cross-Sector Shop Floor Guidance Document, a document that was prepared by a joint CCRA-industry drafting group, and is now posted on the CCRA website. Speakers will include experts from CCRA as well as from the oil and gas industry.

Date:   Wednesday, October 16, 2002
Time:        8:15 a.m. – 11:15 a.m
Location:

The Canadian Pacific Theatre, Mount Royal College – City Centre Campus
833 4th Avenue SW, Calgary

Background
The SR&ED Program affords Canadian companies an avenue to write off expenditures incurred on R&D carried out in Canada. In addition, the Program provides tax credits, which can be carried forward for up to ten years, and used to offset income taxes payable. This is the seventh in the series of Technology Forums dedicated to the discussion of issues of interest to the oil and gas industry. The last session was held in Calgary in May 2002, and it addressed the requirements under Canada’s Income Tax Act for field pilot work and related expenditures to be eligible for SR&ED credits. Our next session will take place in winter 2003 and it will deal with how R&D work performed by third parties may qualify as SR&ED for the performer, for the owner or for both.

Benefits to Participants
This workshop will provide valuable information to oil and gas executives, engineers, accountants, R&D services providers, regulatory agencies, tax practitioners, service companies, funding agencies, legal firms, on rules, guidelines and requirements for claiming R&D work carried out in a commercial or production setting for SR&ED credits. Participants will hear from experts on the subject from CCRA, and from renowned and experienced oil and gas professionals.  The session will be valuable to companies involved in upstream as well in downstream activities including heavy oil and bitumen producers and upgraders, companies involved in developing oilfield equipment and environmental services providers.
