In addition to the constant pressure to become more streamlined and lower overhead is the oil and gas industry’s desire to reduce GHG emissions. But what sounds like a challenge is actually an opportunity… the opportunity for sour gas producers to learn about a simple yet effective solution to significantly improve the efficiency of existing or planned sulphur recovery operations, reduce the energy required to produce more sulphur, and capture CO2 as a new revenue stream.
In the oil and gas sector, natural gas is typically treated to remove CO2 and H2S in order to produce pure natural gas. Catch 44 Inc. has innovatively reconfigured an existing technology to significantly improve the operation of the sulphur recovery process.
Introducing the Palmers Acid Gas Enrichment (PAGE).
The PAGE process captures more than 70% of the CO2 from the acid gas (CO2 and H2S mixture) prior to the acid gas traveling to a sulphur recovery unit, which improves the conversion of H2S to sulphur and doubles the capacity of the unit. For new facilities, the size and cost for the design of the sulphur recovery unit can likely be halved by implementing the PAGE process.
The PAGE process consists of one low pressure absorber operating at atmospheric temperature and one standard rich amine pump used to recycles the existing lean amine. The PAGE process also utilizes existing regeneration and heat transfer equipment without the need for proprietary solvents. By refluxing and recycling streams within the amine process, PAGE separates a stream of pure CO2, thereby resulting in an acid gas with a higher concentration of H2S. The richer acid gas is therefore more efficiently converted by the sulphur recovery unit.
