GEOHAZARDS IMPACT PIPELINE SAFETY
Damage caused by industrial activity has serious repercussions for the surrounding ecosystem, a company’s reputation and social license to operate. A few centimeters of ground movement, caused by subsidence, uplift or rockslides can create serious risk to pipelines. Undetected stress on the pipe structure can result in small leaks or major ruptures, leading to potentially catastrophic consequences for the environment and nearby population.Energy companies are already committed to reduce the environmental impact of industrial activities throughout the operation and development cycle. How do they comply with laws and expectations that demand stronger monitoring standards while still optimizing planning and execution to increase efficiency, reduce downtime and improve overall safety? Geohazard management must be a key focus as companies attempt to constantly monitor changes as the earth interacts with critical infrastructure.

Auracle Geospatial Science Inc., located in Vancouver, British Columbia, has developed a unique method of monitoring, called the Auracle System, which detects and maps the impact of ground structural movement on pipelines. This technology helps in the management of any asset affected by potential land deformation and any water crossing where scouring, silt pressure or bank failure is possible.The 3D Bare Rock Model, the foundation of this technology, makes it possible to “see” vegetation, ice, trees, rocks and soil to identify structures and lithologies on or under land and water to identify and monitor geo-hazards, with 2 mm accuracy, day or night, through all weather, including fog, snow and rain, in remote or inaccessible areas. This early warning system alerts operators to existing and potential geohazards.

- Using satellite imagery to monitor geohazards to augment or replace the use of foot patrols, ground and aerial surveys, LIDAR, bathymetric surveys and environmental surveys to monitor assets
- Integrating companies’ existing geoscience data into a monitoring system
- Developing a baseline model with subsequent surveys to reveal slope movement, faults and faults along the pipeline right of way
- Creating bathymetric models that identify changes in water-bottoms that affect a submerged pipeline
- Opportunities available to participate in a multi-stakeholder consortia to demonstrate technology capabilities.
