  • Glycol dehydration is a commonly used process to reduce water content in natural gas to meet downstream pipeline specifications. In a typical dehydration operation, glycol is put in contact with natural gas, from which the glycol absorbs water. During this process, glycol also absorbs methane, ethane and several other organic compounds including Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylenes (BTEX). This “rich” glycol is then sent to a regenerator, where it is heated to “boil off” the water and other dissolved compounds. The remaining “lean” glycol is then reused, while the vaporized compounds are released from the overheads still column.

Benzene is a carcinogenic compound whose emissions from the glycol regeneration process are strictly regulated in Alberta by the Alberta Energy Regulator (Directive 039). In addition, there is increased focus on new regulations for reducing methane and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions which are also released during the glycol regeneration process.

Gas Pro compression has developed a BTEX VRU system that allows 100% recovery of the emissions from the glycol regenerator. In this system, the regenerator emissions are condensed and then sent into a separator where the liquids drop out. The uncondensed vapor above the liquid then goes into a compressor, which delivers the gas back into the inlet of the facility. The condensed liquids from the separator are pumped to a storage tank.

In early 2017, GreenPath Energy and Process Ecology performed the inspection of one of Gas Pro’s BTEX VRUs on site. The inspection found that the Gas Pro BTEX VRU system resulted in 100% reduction in emissions from the two glycol regenerator still columns in the dehydration facility. It was calculated that about 651 t/yr of GHG emissions and 28.9 t/yr of BTEX emissions would be conserved at that particular site. This technical information sessions aims to provide:

    • An introduction to Gas Pro compression
    • Technical details of the BTEX VRU system and the associated challenges.
    • Test results from the BTEX VRU inspection organized through PTAC
    • An opportunity to bring together representatives from the industry and the regulatory bodies under one roof and have their feedback.

    Background

Gas Pro Compression Corp. is one of the leading providers of low horsepower gas compressor packages in Western Canada. We package different types of compressors: Reciprocating, Rotary vane, Blowers etc. Our packages can be gas engine or electric motor driven. We can also develop packages for sour service environment. On the controls end, we can provide any choice of automation system.

Our packages can be used in a wide range of applications:

    • Casing gas (solution gas) compression on oil wells
    • Conventional gas wells
    • CBM (Coal bed methane) wells
    • Vapor recovery units on storage tanks
    • BTEX VRU for glycol dehydration still column emissions

Our packages are dependable and easy to operate. Furthermore, we work closely with every single client to understand their application and then develop a package that best fits their requirements.
