PTAC TIS: Accelerating the Mitigation of GHG Emissions in the Upstream Oil & Gas Sector

Presented by Process Ecology

December 1, 2021

Introduction

This event will provide an overview of TEAM, a Techno-Economic Analysis Model for developing optimal mitigation strategies and accelerating the mitigation of emissions in the oil and gas sector.

TEAM is a web-based decision support tool that enables the rigorous techno-economic evaluation and optimization of Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCP) and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) mitigation strategies while quantifying co-benefits and considering facility-level constraints and local economic parameters. It can be applied at the jurisdictional, regional, operator, and individual facility levels.

Join us to learn more about TEAM and the statistical methods, simulation techniques, and cost estimation methods available to its users.

TEAM is the result of a close public-private collaboration between Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), Process Ecology Inc. and Clearstone Engineering Ltd. It builds on many years of experience in emissions quantification, environmental policy development, simulation software development, and engineering design for emissions mitigation.

Background

Greenhouse gas emissions reduction has become a top priority all over the globe as efforts to combat climate change intensifies. Recent announcements by leading nations, including the USA, China, and Russia, call for radical actions to achieve reductions of 40-50% relative to 2005 baselines within a decade. New aggressive targets are expected in the short term.

Significant efforts are being devoted to the development of new tools and technologies that can assist economies to achieve these reductions. At the same time, there are already several mitigation technologies and operating practices available that are effective in key industrial sectors, including oil & natural gas, power generation, waste management, and others. To achieve the voluntary and mandatory emission reduction commitments, each operator and facility will need to evaluate which mitigation technologies are the best candidates given their particular constraints and circumstances (e.g., economic parameters, availability of qualified labor, distance to gas gathering systems, etc.).

Data quality and consistency are at the core of these evaluations. Although several agencies have reported valuable “typical” opportunities for mitigation and average marginal abatement cost curves (MACC), it is difficult for facility operators to apply this knowledge to their specific circumstances. There is a need for tailored software tools that can ensure high-quality and consistent SLCP and GHG emissions estimation methodologies are in use, and that can report on site-specific MACC opportunities. TEAM fills that gap.

Speaker Bio

This TIS will be presented by Process Ecology’s Managing Partner, Alberto Alva Argaez, Ph.D., MBA.

Process Ecology is a Calgary-based team with extensive experience in the oil and gas industry that has been providing strategic services and decision support tools to producers since 2003. Our mission is to integrate engineering, process simulation, and software design to develop solutions for the oil & gas industry that are forward-thinking, reliable, and dynamic. Through our extensive work, we have developed a deep understanding of specific industry needs and have developed tools that can benefit hundreds of clients from producers on a facility-level to governments evaluating country-wide situations.

Alberto Alva-Argaez brings over 30 years of experience in chemical engineering research and process optimization for sustainability. In 1999, Alberto joined a world-leading engineering software company (Hyprotech/ Aspentech) in Calgary as product manager for process optimization and thermodynamics software tools where he led the development of several innovative engineering software tools for process optimization. As Founder and Managing Partner with Process Ecology Inc., Alberto has been leading the Business Development and Engineering Software practice since 2003, leading the development of modern web-based air emissions simulation and management software currently in use by over 45 oil & gas producers in Western Canada.
